WOW! The storms up north and the melting snow are bringing record-breaking river highs to the Crescent City. I took two pictures this week. On Monday (5/9/11), directly after the week of flooding in Tennessee and in northern Mississippi, the waters rose several feet here. This was Monday at 7:48PM and it was 79F.(Taken on Zac’s android).
Then, we opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway to divert water from the Mississippi River through Lake Pontchartrain and out to the Gulf that way. The water levels dropped a bit, but it also rained a small bit today. They are considering the opening of the Morganza Floodway to further lower the water by diverting through the Atchafalaya River too. This picture was taken on Friday (5/13/11) at 8:23PM and it was 81F. They closed the levee nearest to the water’s edge and we had to climb the inner levee. Notice the standing water between the levees from today’s rains.
